Bearing With One Another

Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. (Ephesians 4:2)           In writing, lists can be presented in arbitrary order, in order from most to least important, or in order from least to most important. In Hebrew poetry, at least, the convention was to go from least to most important. Doctrine shouldn’t be set that bearing with one another in love is more important than being completely humble and gentle, but the argument should be made that the statement leads up to bearing with one another in love. The preceding matter expresses the (not exhaustive) components of the full command.           Part of the reason I tend to withdraw from people and relationships is that I know myself to be difficult to love. Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve and said, “Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, and the servant of all.” (Mark 9:35)           I remember a scene from an old show from the seventies: Buck Rogers in the Twenty-Fifth Century. Got Your Armor On?

  Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace.   In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.   Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.   And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up. (James 4:10)                 To be fair, people have never been a humble lot. We’re impressed with ourselves. But it seems to me that we’re a lot less humble now than we were when I was a kid – and when I was a kid, we were landing men on the moon. We need to promote ourselves at every opportunity and we all deserve everything that the super-rich deserve. Foolishness and Wisdom

For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.   For it is written: “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise;     the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate.”    Where is the wise person? Wisdom

If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. (James 1:5) But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, unwavering, without hypocrisy. (James 3:17)           Yesterday, I wrote about asking for the wrong thing, and asking for the right thing. One of the right things I mentioned as wisdom. Today’s passage tells us that God not only gives wisdom, He’s generous with it. I pray for wisdom. I ask others to pray for wisdom for me. It’s been a priority prayer request for the past three years, at least. If you ask me – if you ask quite a few people I know – we would agree that I’m not wise. I’m foolish.            I would say I am foolish for several reasons. First, I’m a lousy judge of such things. Put wisdom on a table so that I can compare what I have to an objective standard, and what I have might compare well with the exemplar. Secondly,

Ask.

  Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!  (Matthew 7:7-8)           A week ago, I kidded about wanting a knight in shining armor, then corrected myself. What I really wanted was someone to come clean the motorhome (in and out but especially in), do my laundry, and hand me a million dollars. I know it was a week ago because we’re back to laundry day. I was whining, of course, but today’s passage brings it to mind. I mean, “ask, and it will be given,” right? Anything I want any time I want, for any reason that I want it. Blank signed check. 

How Does Your Garden Grow?

Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life . (Galatians 6:7-8)           As a gardener, one of the things I hate is planting something and having crabgrass or other weeds grow up around it. It would be worse if I planted tomato seeds, and brussels sprouts or lima beans came up. Fortunately, as Gregor Mendel’s laws of inheritance point out, when you plant tomatoes, you get tomatoes, not brussels sprouts or lima beans.            Planting good seeds is not the only thing necessary to get a harvest of tomatoes. Even if you plant the perfect seeds, if you plant them in the wrong place, or the wrong way,            Part of the problem when it comes to sowing seeds of behavior is that this sort of plant requires. Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. (James 1:2-3) And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. (Romans 8:28) If one of you says to them, “Go in peace ; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it? (James 2:16)           Don’t you hate it when people who see that you’re facing a hard time quote verses like these? I especially hate it because it feel to me as though the person is using them as a “Get out of jail free” card. I Follow...

        I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another in what you say and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly united in mind and thought.           Do everything without grumbling or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, “children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation.” Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky as you hold firmly to the word of life. Who Ya Gonna Love?

Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar. For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen. I tried to explain a little, but there’s a language difference. The fact is that if she is going to hell, it’s not because of what she writes. Sleepless Cain

The Lord looked with favor on Abel and his offering,   but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was very angry, and his face was downcast.           Then the Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast?   If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? There are folks who scream that “victims” need to be believed and that it’s wrong for us to make them relive the horror of their attack in a public courtroom, with lawyers who accuse them of lying. Then, those same folks who scream for everyone to believe and pity the victim, hold up pictures of their current “Victim Poster Child” and scream their story across the world wide web where millions ogle and drool over details that will let them exploit that victim for their own purposes…all in the name of their -ism. What Can Mere Mortals Do To Me?

When hard pressed, I cried to the Lord; he brought me into a spacious place. The Lord is with me; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me? (Psalm 118:5-6) What can mere mortals do to me? Um… Abandon, Abuse, Accuse, Beat, Belittle, Betray, Bully, Cheat, Deceive, Defraud, Enslave, Extort Forsake, Humiliate, Imprison, Insult, Kill, Leave, Misrepresent, Murder, Persecute, R ape, Ridicule, Rob, Slander/libel, Torture, Trick….      I’m sure I’ve missed a few, and I’m sure David was aware of at least a few of them. Given all of the commandments in the Old Testament, it’s evident that God was aware of these things, too. So why would God include these words of David in Scripture? Why would David say them? Holy Water

          I am the Lord your God; consecrate yourselves and be holy, because I am holy. Do not make yourselves unclean by any creature that moves along the ground. I am the Lord, who brought you up out of Egypt to be your God; therefore be holy, because I am holy. (Leviticus 11:44-45)           But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.” (I Peter 1:15-16)           If you read or watch TV, you’ll learn that “holy water” when applied to something unholy or undead is supposed to destroy the evil thing. Holy water may be said to exist, but all it means is that the water has been set apart to be used for something associated with the Church. It can come out of the tap just like any other water, and there doesn’t really seem to me to be any reason to bother with the notion.            But I can’t help but wonder what holy water would do if holy water actually had some power. Glorious Grace

to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves. (Ephesians 1:6)                 Can you imagine inglorious grace? Is there such a thing as plain grace that somehow ranks lower than glorious grace? I suppose that there might be what we would call “common grace,” meaning grace that is given to everyone, like sunlight or oxygen. Wouldn’t glorious grace have to be better than that?                  Better than normal? Ah yes, sunlight and oxygen are normal, but can you imagine life without them? For someone who is in need of light or air, they are probably pretty glorious. But let’s turn that around a little. What could we say about something that goes beyond making it possible for us to live? In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace that He lavished on us. Spiritual Blessings

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ. (Ephesians 1:3)             This morning, I find myself wondering about how much God, the Father loves Jesus, the Son. We’re told that God is love, so the first clue to how much the Father loves the Son is that it is with all of His omnipotent power, with all of Himself, holding nothing of Himself back that is good to give.            Someone (possibly Wayne Grudem) wrote that God’s being love supports the argument of God being triune since that which loves must have an object to love. The writer explained that God had no need to create us since His love is made complete and perfect in the love shared among the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. And yet, God created spiritual beings (angels at least) and physical beings. His doing so allows Him to demonstrate what has always been true, that He is capable of loving beings that aren’t Him.
