I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you by the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel— which is really no gospel at all. May's Readers' Reflection Question

(Romans 8:26-27)          Every month, the Erie Times News asks for Readers’ Reflections to a question in their Religion section. I generally provide an answer. This month’s answers were published this morning. The question was if our prayers have been answered and what we did if the answer wasn’t what we wanted. There were lots of good answers. Here was mine:           My prayers seem to be answered “no” more often than “yes.” I returned to Erie praying about the direction for the next six months. Great And Unsearchable Things.

Plans

For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD , “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do everything through him who gives me strength. (Philippians 4:12-13)      The other day, I saw a complaint on Face Book asking how in the world someone who is only paid eight dollars per hour is supposed to be able to buy a new house and a new car, and pay for an education or get married. I responded with the question of why this person thought that new houses and cars were necessary and pointed out that getting married doesn’t have to cost a fortune. Of course, I didn’t get a response. The truth is, I’m just as silly. There are things that I consider necessary to contentment. Many of them don’t cost as much as a house, a car, an education or a wedding, but that doesn’t mean that they are within my means. My Christmas and birthday presents this year were mostly spent b

Temptations

The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.” (Matthew 4:3)   “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down. For it is written: “‘He will command his angels concerning you, and they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’ (Matthew 4:6)   Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. “All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me.” (Matthew 4:8-9)             If you read Luke 4, you’ll see that the doctor reverses the order of the second and third temptation. This is not a contradiction or an error. Eastern literature is not obsessed with linear time the way we are. In whichever way they took place, they both took place none-the-less.           You’ll note that the first temptation is about food and you’ve probably been told that this is a parallel to Genesis 3.

Do No Harm

Facing Battles

Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:9)           I have some friends, and some friends of friends, who need this word right now. Truth told, I need this word right now, and at least every other second of every day, even when life isn’t especially hard. But I have some friends, and friends of friends, for whom life is hard right now.           Joshua had been anointed as leader of the Israelites. They had mourned Moses and it was time to cross the Jordan and begin to take the Promised Land. The people had told him to be strong and courageous. Now God has commanded him to be strong and courageous. He had five Canaanite nations to destroy but more importantly, he had to build Israel at the same time. He Is Able

To him who is able to keep you from falling and to present you before his glorious presence without fault and with great joy— to the only God our Savior be glory, majesty, power and authority, through Jesus Christ our Lord, before all ages, now and forevermore! Amen. (Jude 1:24-25)             This is one of my favorite benedictions and it fits nicely with yesterday’s passage. Imagine that – Scripture dovetailing with Scripture! God is able to keep you from falling. God is able to present you before His glorious presence without fault. God is able to present you before His glorious presence with great joy. God is able. But He Is God

In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus (Philippians 1:4-6)             How can we have joy when times are tough? Paul said that he prayed with joy for the Philippians. Things back then weren’t pretty for Christians. The government hated them. People of other faiths hated them. Once again, Dell Tackett’s admonition to “Look on the face of God” comes to mind. We can have joy, and pray with joy for people facing tough times because God is omnipotent. Nothing can stop Him from carrying on the good work He began in us. He doesn’t get tired. He doesn’t take vacations.            We can have that joy because God is omnipresent. He doesn’t have to stop working on His work in me so that He can take some time to go work on you. He could work on both of us even if I’m in Erie and

Nadab And Abihu

Moses and Aaron then went into the Tent of Meeting. When they came out, they blessed the people; and the glory of the LORD appeared to all the people. Fire came out from the presence of the LORD and consumed the burnt offering and the fat portions on the altar. And when all the people saw it, they shouted for joy and fell facedown. Aaron’s sons Nadab and Abihu took their censers, put fire in them and added incense; and they offered unauthorized fire before the LORD , contrary to his command. (Leviticus 9:23 - 10:2)   One of the challenges of reading Middle Eastern literature is that time isn’t always documented. We aren’t told how much time passed between chapters nine and ten. Given the fact that the Israelites made the golden calf while Moses was receiving the commandments from God , I can believe that the two events happened at about the same time.
