He Is Able


To him who is able to keep you from falling and to present you before his glorious presence without fault and with great joy— to the only God our Savior be glory, majesty, power and authority, through Jesus Christ our Lord, before all ages, now and forevermore! Amen. (Jude 1:24-25) 

          This is one of my favorite benedictions and it fits nicely with yesterday’s passage. Imagine that – Scripture dovetailing with Scripture! God is able to keep you from falling. God is able to present you before His glorious presence without fault. God is able to present you before His glorious presence with great joy. God is able. When I start whining that I’m such a failure (and I am), God says, “I am able!”
           When the Nebuchadnezzar in your life looks down from his throne and says, “…But if you do not worship it, you will be thrown immediately into a blazing furnace. Then what god will be able to rescue you from my hand?”
             God says, “No sweat, I’ve done it before. I am able.”
          And the “great joy”? Whose is that, God’s or yours? Yes. Imagine that.

Think About These Things

                 Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. (Philippians 4:8) This passage is a major challenge for me. Like everyone else, I struggle to keep my thoughts from wandering off into the weeds, then wondering what possible benefits those weeds might have… Sigh. But as a writer, I have to delve at least a little into the ignoble, wrong, impure, unlovely, and debased. After all, there’s no story if everything’s just as it should be and everyone’s happy. As Christians, there are times when we need to deal with all the negatives, but that makes it even more important that we practice turning our minds by force of attention to what is noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent, and praiseworthy. A Virgin?
