Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. (Philippians 4:6)
In the history of calming
down, has anyone actually been calmed down by being told to calm down? I doubt
it. In the same way, being told “Do not be anxious” does nothing to ease
anxiety. As usual, I’m trying to write a blog the day before you read it, so I
haven’t spent the evening selling (or hoping to sell) books. But it’s only a
few hours away and I’m already chalking up ticks in the failure column. I can’t
seem to get my stuff set up to use the point-of-sale system I bought. It will
happen, but not before this evening.
Oh, I have gotten some
things done, but blah, blah, blah. My active day has gone off the rails. And
when I look at the blah, blah, blah -when I consider it, I find that my major
anxiety was really due to one element. And now that the event that caused all
the anxiety is over, that element wasn’t a major problem. The real problem that
I should have been praying about was spiritual, as I found myself with a group
of people for whom the term “worldly” is an understatement. I was polite (of
course!) but it wasn’t comfortable. But, I got some ideas, including how to
pray about such things in the future.
