According to Gary Chapman in his 1992
book, The Five Love Languages, these are the five ways that people
communicate the love to one another. You have a “native” love language. Do you
know what it is? If not, here’s the official web page for the quiz (among others):
Discover Your Love Language® - The 5 Love
Languages® (Official Quiz)
I’m sharing that with you because if love
languages exist (and I believe they do), God invented them. He speaks each of
them fluently, but I doubt He speaks to you in only one of them. There’s one
you are likely to recognize best.
Today’s verse shows up in the first
and last verse of the chapter, and in between, every verse ends with “His love
endures forever.” So here’s the challenge that comes to mind. Notice when God –
either on His own or through someone else – speaks your love language to you. For
one day, or one hour, or five minutes, be aware of what’s going on around you
and notice God saying “I love you.” After all, His love endures forever. Another
time, pick another of the love languages and watch for it. When you experience
it, thank Him, because this isn’t about our feelings or our standing in
judgment of God (“God, You did a lousy job of loving me today. You didn’t do what I wanted!”) It’s about opening
our eyes to what God does do. Here’s a
prayer to start us out:
Lord, as I go through my day today,
open my eyes and heal the spiritual blindness that hides Your love from me.
Cause me to see Your love for me through the (Name the love language) that
You do (Yourself or through others), because Your love endures forever. Awaken
my mind in awareness of that love, and my heart in praise to You for it.
