On Wings Like Eagles

Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. He gives  strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.  Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. (Isaiah 40:27-31)

Feel free to sing the last couple of sentences. Then, let’s begin with the Lord, the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth does not grow tired or weary. Youths grow tired and weary. Though it doesn’t say it, old folks grow tired and weary. In fact, the point is that old folks look at youths and think that they are like the Energizer Bunny…they keep going and going. But youths get tired and weary, but God doesn’t. Now, when we think about getting tired, we tend to think in terms of physical tiredness, so it makes sense that God, being a non-physical being, could not get tired. But if we think a little longer, we realize that we also get emotionally and intellectually tired. Bored may fit in there somewhere. This is what I find more mind-blowing. God doesn’t get emotionally or intellectually tired. He doesn’t get bored with you or me. His brain doesn’t shut down at ___ p.m.

When we get tired, what we need is rest. When we read these verses, we sometimes imagine they mean we’re being promised victory or freedom. At the very least, we like to think that what’s promised is “problem solved!” Somehow, we have it in our heads that birds in flight, especially the big birds of prey, find freedom and joy in flight. And maybe they do, but I think it’s just as likely that their flight is an exercise done in a search for prey. It’s work. They can do it because they’re big, strong birds, but they can only fly 5-10 hours (about 200 miles) before landing for a rest. That’s impressive. It is impressive.

The point, however, is that God gives them the rest and/or the capacity to fly on. He doesn’t end their need to ever fly again. When we get tired and God gives us rest so that we can mount up with wings like eagles, it’s not that we are released and allowed to fly. It’s that we are given the strength to fly again. It isn’t freedom, it’s endurance.

The List

Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,   through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we boast in the hope of the glory of God. Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance;   perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us. (Romans 5:1-5)           Think about it. We have been justified. At least, we could be justified if we stopped insisting that our justification be based on our merits. We have peace with God, or could have peace if we stopped throwing temper tantrums. We have gained access into grace i...

Listen!

While he was still speaking, a bright cloud enveloped them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!” (Matthew 17:5)            Do you like roller coasters? I don't. You spend forever climbing a hill. You get to the top and have half a second, then you race down to a low point. Sometimes the racing down involves tying your insides into knots. At the bottom, you either have to be dragged up another hill or you get off the ride. Peter's life was a roller coaster from the time he met Jesus. There would be miracles, and then Jesus would teach things that didn't always make sense, and then they'd go out and perform miracles, and return to be taught. Peter was praised for giving the right answer to "Who do you say that I am?" Jesus said that said answer came from God. Peter was at the top of the hill.            ...

Prayer Lists

Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good. (I Peter 2:2-3)   In connection with what I wrote yesterday about the possibility that I’m wrong, I’m feeling the need to go back to basics - craving spiritual milk because somehow, I missed something. It’s a little embarrassing, craving milk like a newborn, but the truth probably is that we are newborns many times in many ways in our lives. From God’s perspective, we may never be anything more than newborns, forever needing that milk. On the other hand, being a newborn can also be exciting because so much is new. My mind is playing pinball - ricocheting from one idea to the next and through six more before it happens to hit the third again. The main topic is prayer. I have at least seven organizing structures all somewhat influenced by the movie War Room , which I’v...
