He sends you abundant showers, both autumn and spring rains, as before . (Joel 2:23)                 This was the verse chosen by BibleGateway.com for the day. I try to use them so I’m not writing about the same things all the time. It’s also a verse I’d like to hold God to. In fact, I’d like Him to provide summer rains, too. Of course, the passage makes it clear that it wasn’t a promise, and it was specific to Zion, not to me on a hill over one of the Great Lakes, where water is available whenever we want it, as long as we pay the price. So the verse might not seem to apply to me, or to you wherever you are.                ...

(Philippians 2:3-4)                 First, to be very clear, this isn’t a call for “us” to make the interest of everyone on Earth more important or more valid than ours. It addresses our behavior toward other Christians in our community. This is not to say that we should never look to the interest of non-Christians. It simply means that doing so is not the same as looking to the interest of our fellow-believers, and not as high a priority. It also does not mean believing, saying, feeling, or doing whatever someone wants us to. Looking to the interest of another can mean confronting them about what they believe, say, feel, or do with both love and truth.    ...

(James 3:13)                 Wisdom and understanding don’t really happen without activity.  You do something stupid, fall, and hurt yourself and if you gain wisdom, you understand that you shouldn’t do that stupid thing. You might learn the same by watching someone else go through the process, but too often, we take their failure as a challenge. “They did it wrong, we will do it right/better . ”                 If we are wise, we should show it, not by impressing others with our wisdom, but by doing what is right.                  All a person’s ways seem pure to them, but motives are weighed by the Lord . (Proverbs 16:2) “Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven. (Matthew 6:1) Generally, we think that this means all a person’s ways seem purely right or good to them. I suspect that it’s often true. But a person’s ways can also seem purely worthless, evil, hopeless, etc. The point is that our estimation of what we have done and who we are is often so like the story of the size of the fish that got away. We can’t imagine that our perceptions are skewed. This thing we care about is important! And it is, but part of what is important to us is being seen as what we think is good. God sees what we do, and He not only knows what we’re doing but why we do it. If we do things to look good to others or for their praise, and we get that praise, we...

Is there any reason to reject the idea that "united" and "common sharing" are different in any substantial way? One might say that common sharing is the means of being united.  Of course, my automatic reaction to this idea is to pull out the examination table and evaluate whether  I am functionally united with Christ.                     Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight. (I Peter 3:3-4)                 Technically, these verses concern wives, but young, unmarried women may grow up to be wives, and older widows provide examples for younger women to model. In addition, there are men who are into outward adornment, elaborate hairstyles, and fine clothes. (Psalm 143:10)                 A level path doesn’t go up and down, lean from side to side, or have lots of ruts or rocks. So, no mountain tops, no deep valleys. Easygoing but probably boring and generally not a description of reality. Life is full of ups and downs, twists and turns, off-balance moments, and ruts and rocks that seem to appear from nowhere just as you put your foot down.                 God can make our path perfectly flat and boring, but He usually doesn’t, and as a result, people sometimes get angry at a God who seems to have lied to them. For some people, sinning is breaking the rules, either the Ten Commandments or the seven deadly sins: wrath , greed , pride , envy , sloth , lust , and gluttony . When I was in college, someone explained that the Greek term comes from archery, in which “sin” was the failure to hit the bullseye and/or the distance by which one missed. For most of us, that would seem a little silly. I mean, if you miss a bullseye by 0.01 inches, while that does convey the idea of sin as imperfection, it’s still likely to kill the animal, and it’s still so much better than th...

                 Then Moses said to him, “If your Presence does not go with us, do not send us up from here . (Exodus 33:15) It’s tempting to be jealous of the Israelites. They had the pillar of cloud by day and the pillar of fire by night to guide them. We have the still, small voice and circumstances. Yes, God has done an excellent job of guiding me. By that, I mean there have been times when I have see, heard, or felt the guidance. But that’s not the same as a pillar of cloud and of fire. You can see that, and if it turns left, there is no doubt you’re supposed to turn left. With the still, small voice and circumstances, faith is needed.                  She gave this name to the Lord who spoke to her: “You are the God who sees me,” for she said, “I have now seen the One who sees me.” (Genesis 16:13)                 There is a character in the story I’m writing who was inspired, at least a little, by Hagar. He was in a bad situation and met a god he calls “the God Who Sees,” and his life has changed. He met my main character, and in their most recent conversation, she mentioned trying to find the answer to who she is. His answer ties back to his life-changing experience of encountering the “God who sees me.” I don’t intend to try to build some big theological something out of my story, as if my story holds the answers to the mysteries of the ages. Amen. (Ephesians 3:20-21)                 What can you imagine? What could you ask? OK, obviously, since God is God, He is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine. We know that. But do we really know that? If you think about challenging God to do more than you ask or think, the things that probably come to mind will include wealth, power, fame, and probably the repair or healing of things that aren’t as you think they should be. It might seem strange that Paul would claim God can do beyond what we can imagine, even if, at the same time, we understand that it’s only logical that He must be able to do so. ...

The authorities that exist have been established by God.  (Romans 13:1)                 This is a tough one, especially for Americans. We tend to think that if we don’t like a government official, we can start a revolution. This is the tone of the rhetoric I hear about our elected officials and about those involved in the Lindsey Clancy debate. When we look at this passage, we tend to think, “Oh, it’s saying we have to obey the emperor, the king, or the president.
