Picking Favorites

             May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all. (II Corinthians 13:14)

We know there’s a Trinity out there that we don’t understand, and Scripture isn’t really clear about which one is supposed to do what. In other words, they’re not exactly definable or controllable. This is one of the things I think is attractive about a pantheon. Mars/Arez is the god of war. Ceres is the goddess of grain. Hermes/Mercury is the god of medicine. If you have a need, you pick the god who has authority over that matter. It’s like choosing the right store.

But God doesn’t work that way. He’s a package deal.  You get all three or you get none. You can’t pit them against each other. There’s no competition, no disagreement. If you don’t like the answer one member of the Trinity gives, it’s a waste of time going to a different member in hopes of a different answer. Despite this, I suspect we tend to have a preference of one over the others. Some may pray to the Father, because He’s in charge. Or they may pray to the Son because He’s our risen Savior and soon-coming King. Still others may pray to the Spirit because He’s our comforter, teacher, and giver of gifts. ,

Even in today’s verse, Jesus is the source of grace, God is the source of love, and the Holy Spirit is the producer of fellowship. They are all involved, and I’m not going to suggest one answer is necessarily better than another. Today, I’m just suggesting that you think a little about your own perspective. Do you have a preference? Why? Should you?

Shark Fins, Triple Dog Dares, Heroes, Villains and Sidekicks
