God's Wisdom Is Simple

Where is the wise man? Where is the scholar? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe. Jews demand miraculous signs and Greeks look for wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God . (I Corinthians 1:20-24)           Wisdom. How do you figure out what to do? God's wisdom is simple. God does what it is in His nature to do, so He is at peace with Himself and with what He does. Consider that God is love. The Bible never says that God's love is unconditional, but we observe historically that it is unconditional because Jesus came and died for us. [1] He loves us to the point o...

Really? Truly!

"Into your hands I commit my spirit; redeem me, O LORD , the God of truth." (Psalm 31:5)             Are you glad that God is the God of truth? Imagine a world in which "truth" changed from moment to moment. That cup of coffee you enjoyed earlier could turn into poison in your stomach. Red lights could come to mean "go" and the solidity of your car, or the fluidity of the air could change in an instant. Rain could turn to rocks. The universe could wink out of existence or come to life. The sun could move so that we're as close as Mercury, or as far away as Neptune. Your pay check could be given to someone living in Bumblebee, Arizona. Your marriage license suddenly say that you are married to Hannibal Lector. He could eat you for breakfast and regurgitate you for lunch, except you wouldn't be yourself, you would be Jabba Desilijic Tiure and in the meanwhile, he could turn into a flying spaghetti monster. Your children could ceas...

Bigger Than The Universe.

What other nation is so great as to have their gods near them the way the LORD our God is near us whenever we pray to him? (Deuteronomy 4:7)           The observable universe is supposedly 91 billion light years in diameter. That means it supposedly take 91 billion light years for the light from the most distant stars to reach the earth. I'm not entirely sure how they can claim that this, since the universe is (according to old earth folks) less than 15 billion years old. That means the light from those most distant objects won't reach us for another   seventy six billion (76,000,000,000) years. Even accepting the idea that the universe used to be smaller, it doesn't make sense.              It's not really accurate to say God is bigger, because bigness is a physical characteristic. Technically, God has no size, but God is "bigger" than the universe and smaller than a singu...

Actually, Really, Honestly and Truly

Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the LORD , I will be joyful in God my Savior. The Sovereign LORD is my strength; he makes my feet like the feet of a deer he enables me to go on the heights. (Habakkuk 3:17-19)            "No matter who the president is, Jesus is King." This phrase or one like it came to mind yesterday. I don't recall whether I was thinking about the president, or a judge, or someone else. I found myself wondering if I really meant it. Would I be content if someone of whom I didn't approve was president? The fact is, I haven't approved of the president for the past eight years and I'm not thrilled about the man who is taking his place. Am I living as if it doesn't matter who the president is because Jesus is King? ...

Responsibities

If I were hungry I would not tell you, for the world is mine, and all that is in it. Do I eat the flesh of bulls or drink the blood of goats? Sacrifice thank offerings to God, fulfill your vows to the Most High, and call upon me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you will honor me.” (Psalm 50:12-15)             "Oh, don't leave me! I need you! I can't live without you!" Some people long to hear those words. Some people long to hear them from God. When someone dies, particularly a child, some people tell the mourning family that "God needed another angel." I understand that they're trying to comfort the family, but today's passage reminds us that God doesn't need us, at all, for anything, ever. He wasn't lonely before He created us. The Father, the Son and The Holy Spirit were a sufficient community without us.           Let's face it, we cost God exponentially more than ...

Independence

God said to Moses, “ I AM WHO I AM . This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘ I AM has sent me to you.’ ” (Exodus 3:14)             A few days ago, I wrote about God being incomprehensible. Today's passage touches on one of those incomprehensible attributes of God. He is self-existent. The "big word" for this is aseity. Aseity is " The divine property of being completely independent of everything distinct from God himself. Everything other than God depends on God, but God depends on nothing besides himself." [1]           As a writer, and particularly as a writer of fantasy, I often see the relationship between a writer and the book as a metaphor for the relationship between God and man. The world and characters in a book are created by the author. Nothing within the book creates the author. The author existed before the book began and continues to exist after the book is fin...

No.

Then Job replied to the LORD, “I know that you can do all things; no plan of yours can be thwarted." (Job 42:1-2)   I did not see a temple in the city, because the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple. (Revelation 21:22)             Job is believed to be the oldest book in the Bible. Genesis tells of the beginning, but Job was apparently written first. That means that from the first to the last, God has been known to be omnipotent or almighty. In ancient times, the gods were believed to "belong" to the people with whom they were associated. Many of the disasters with which God plagued Egypt were slap downs of the Egyptian gods. When the Philistines captured the Ark of the Covenant and put it in the temple of Dagon, the idol fell over and broke. When Elijah and the 400 priests of Baal got together for their cage match, the first part of the battle was the question of which god could and would bring fire on ...
