When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them? You have made them a little lower than the angels and crowned them with glory and honor. You made them rulers over the works of your hands; you put everything under their feet: all flocks and herds, and the animals of the wild, the birds in the sky, and the fish in the sea, all that swim the paths of the seas. Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! (Psalms 8:3-9)
Last night was the
Harvest/Corn Moon and in some places on the planet, it was also a Blood
Moon/Lunar Eclipse. We have a fascination with the sky and with our planet and
its creatures. Even those who abuse the planet and its creatures sometimes
stand in awe of its magnificence. One of the videos I’ve been seeing on
Facebook is the Lake Erie seiche, which means that the wind has pushed the
water in Lake Erie east, leaving puddles where there used to be water, and high
water at the other end. According to scientists, Betelgeuse could go (super)nova
at any time and if it does, we may be able to see its light during the
day. I definitely want to take a picture
of that! It is all just so cool!
I have two hypothetical
questions in mind as I think about this. Imagine that you put your heart and
soul into making something, and no one admires it. They barely seem to even
notice it. They don’t say a word about it to you. How would you feel? If you’re
a parent, an artist, a craftsman, or cook, you probably know. I do.
The second question
intensifies the first. How would you feel if you gave them something you’d made
as a gift, and they deliberately and maliciously damaged it? Now go back and
read the passage above.
