Prudence and Global Warming

The simple believe anything, but the prudent give thought to their steps. (Proverbs 14:13)
Global warming is in the news again, or at least in my feed again. Recently, one person scolded me because I mentioned an article that says that 97% of climate scientists supposedly claim that man-made global warming is taking place don’t actually claim that it. I was scolded for not trusting scientists. I said I hadn’t read the article, which refuted the popular theory. That’s why she scolded me, but she went on to add that I should trust scientists. Yesterday, someone posted a meme saying that scientists have once again landed a ship “on a dime” on Mars, so we should trust scientists about global warming. I’ve had people tell me they just can’t understand how I could reject evolution. Did I need evidence? Just look around, and trust scientists. If the scientists said it, it must be true because scientists, it seems, are incapable of personal biases, error, or political agenda. What’s the phrase? The science is settled and those who disagree are not good scientists (which is a tautology, by the way.)
So here’s my take on global warming. I think we need to give prudent thought to the issue. Is the earth warming? It seems to be. Why is it warming? Is it because of human activity? Is it because it’s been warming up since the last ice age? Is it just part of a cycle? Maybe to all of the above. Supposedly, science says it’s all about the carbon dioxide. Maybe, but the earth system is far more complex than that. There are a lot of discoveries that have been made within the last fifty years that are only beginning to be thought of in terms of the whole system, but we are supposed to trust scientists – without hesitation – to solve the problem using their computerized models. I find the idea of turning the earth into a police state run by scientists more than a little scary, especially given the supposedly high percentage of scientists who don’t include God in their formulae. I am too aware of prophecy to think it a good idea to turn control of the world over to any individual or group, and especially a group that leaves God out of the equation. Who is more likely than scientists to decide to put a numbered RFID chip into a hand or forehead? An issue more central to the current question – how do we know that the scientists have come up with a right answer? Yes, engineers can land a spacecraft on a dime on Mars, but if they get something wrong, we might have to move to Mars to survive, and I’m not sure we’re ready for that.
So if a CEO wants to put ten million dollars toward saving the environment, I’m all for it, but don’t place us under the authority of scientists, and be careful if you want to bet my life that they’re right.

Saved?

I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand. I and the Father are one.” (John 10:28-30) “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’ Then I will tell them plainly, “I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’ ” (Matthew 7:21-23) Not at all! Let God be true, and every human being a liar. As it is written: “So that you may be proved right when you speak and prevail when you judge.” (Romans 3:4)   What conclusion do you draw when someone who was raised in a Christian family and church, perhaps even playing a significant role in a chur...

A Virgin?

Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel. (Isaiah 7:14)           This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit. (Matthew 1:18)           But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favor with God. You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end.”            “How will this be,” Mary asked the...

Meditations of the Heart

May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer. (Psalm19:14)           As I started writing this post, I noted that the meditations of my heart are all over the mental landscape, from a hub where eight superhighways come together to a lunar or nuclear landscape. Do you see my error? The moment I read the word meditation , I think about thoughts. But what’s described here is the meditations of our hearts ; our wills.           While the meditations of our minds may be all over the place, the meditations of our wills tend to be a little more stable by the time we are adults. We no longer tend to want to pursue the ten separate careers we did in any given day as children. Part of this is humble acceptance of reality. We come to understand that we can’t do it all. I think another part of it is disappointmen...
