My salvation and my honor depend on God; he is my mighty rock, my refuge. (Psalm 62:7)
Crisis. The government needs to do something! Crisis. You
need to do something! Crisis. I need to do something. I’ve noted before that
when we’re in pain, angry, or afraid, our focus tends to shrink to the size of
the pain, anger, or fear. Included in that focus is the god to whom we look for
salvation, honor, and refuge. Oh, we may also ask God for help, but our more
immediate god for the solution is the one we really look to, whether it’s the
government or ourselves.
Some folks may respond that sitting around waiting for God
to do something when we can and should be doing something ourselves is stupid.
The old “our thoughts and prayers are with you” garbage is just that – garbage.
But that’s not what I’m talking about. What I’m talking about is the automatic
response to a crisis being to look to the government, or to look to other
people or to ourselves as our salvation, or hope, our mighty rock, and our
refuge.
In other words, I’m saying that when the going gets tough, God
should be at the top of our “Who ya gonna call?” list, not the bottom.
