You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. (Romans 5:6-8)
Look in a mirror and say it out loud (or at least say it aloud). “Christ was born for me. He died for me.” Repeat it a few times. Perhaps you feel entitled. Of course He
was born and died for you. You’re worth it. Or, possibly your reaction to this
idea is more along the lines of, “Well, of course He did. That’s His job. And He
wasn’t born and didn’t die just for me. I’m just one of the worthless cull ewes/sheep
that tag along. I’m the price He had to pay to end up with people like Moses,
David, Peter, and Paul.”
It’s
actually worse than that. We’re all the cull ewes. That means we aren’t worth breeding; not only are we not worth keeping in the herd, but we also waste resources the herd should get and carry diseases that can and do infect the
herd.
And God
saw all that, and sees all that, and yet He was born, and He died, for us.
