Part Of Your World

Now the family heads of the Levites approached Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun, and the heads of the other tribal families of Israel at Shiloh in Canaan and said to them, “The LORD commanded through Moses that you give us towns to live in, with pasturelands for our livestock.” So, as the LORD had commanded, the Israelites gave the Levites the following towns and pasturelands out of their own inheritance:(Joshua 21:1-3)

And the winner is... Judah. And the winner is...Joseph. And the winner is...Simeon, and so on down the line. I can almost imagine Joshua dusting off his hands, glad to be done with what was probably more difficult and more contentious than conquering: the division of the land among the tribes. He's ready to go to his tent, have a glass of wine and relax, when a group of men approach with the "We need to talk" look on their faces. They weren't pushy about it, they just reminded Joshua and the other tribes that God promised Levi that the rest of the tribes would provide them with towns to live in.
Were you ever one of those kids who got picked last when your gym class chose teams? I wonder if Levi sometimes felt like that kid. The rest of the Israelites went off to war, Levi cleaned and polished the Tabernacle. Sure,  "it's an honor" and all that but everyone else is cutting the throats of our enemies, while we're cutting the throats of bulls, rams and turtle doves. Yeah, we're privileged but  we have to beg and we have to remind others about their responsibilities to us because we don't have the same rights as everyone else.
I understand the feeling. Other people my age are married. Their kids are married and they have grandkids. As I walk around my neighborhood, I see some pretty nice looking places, and some ram shackles. My home here is closer to the latter. I don't have a regular job, haven't watched TV in a year, and I've only gotten my hair cut once since September, 2015.
Don't get me wrong - I don't regret the choices I've made, but "everybody else".... Other people have "normal" lives that I probably wouldn't want if they were offered, but it's easy to long for something you don't have, even if you know it wouldn't make you happy, just because "everyone else" seems to be enjoying it.
Here are the instructions God gave Israel and the Church in the New Testament. If you are part of one of the categories of "others" (widows, orphans, priests/ministers, singles,  prisoners, the poor...not as a result of sin) then do not hesitate to call on the Israel or the Church to share with their inheritance with you. If you are blessed with a more typical life, be sure to set aside part of your world for the members of your community who have been called to a different life. It's not your responsibility to take care of them - but it is your responsibility to share your world with them and to protect them so that they can do what God has called them to do.

Saved?

I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand. I and the Father are one.” (John 10:28-30) “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’ Then I will tell them plainly, “I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’ ” (Matthew 7:21-23) Not at all! Let God be true, and every human being a liar. As it is written: “So that you may be proved right when you speak and prevail when you judge.” (Romans 3:4)   What conclusion do you draw when someone who was raised in a Christian family and church, perhaps even playing a significant role in a chur...

The Shepherd!

“I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me— just as the Father knows me and I know the Father—and I lay down my life for the sheep . (John 10:14) God said to Moses, “I am who I am. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I am has sent me to you.’” (Genesis 3:14) The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths     for his name’s sake. Even though I walk     through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil,     for you are with me; your rod and your staff,     they comfort me. (Psalm 23:1-4) For the Jews, it was politically incorrect to make claims about yourself as a teacher (or possibly as anything else.) Teachers were expected to take pride in the...

Meditations of the Heart

May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer. (Psalm19:14)           As I started writing this post, I noted that the meditations of my heart are all over the mental landscape, from a hub where eight superhighways come together to a lunar or nuclear landscape. Do you see my error? The moment I read the word meditation , I think about thoughts. But what’s described here is the meditations of our hearts ; our wills.           While the meditations of our minds may be all over the place, the meditations of our wills tend to be a little more stable by the time we are adults. We no longer tend to want to pursue the ten separate careers we did in any given day as children. Part of this is humble acceptance of reality. We come to understand that we can’t do it all. I think another part of it is disappointmen...
