Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. (Galatians 6:9)
Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. (Isaiah 40:28)
I’m a little weary. I worked Tuesday and Wednesday, then spent Thursday running errands and donating platelets. It’s now after dinner, and I’m just beginning my blog. I know, I don’t have to do most of these things, so I do it to myself, but I’m still weary. I get the impression that many people are weary in one way or with one thing or another. That means I’m not bragging, and most of you probably don’t have the energy to care or to pitch a fit about it anyway. Even if you did, remember – Thanksgiving and Black Friday are one week away. You need to get ready and rest up for them (simultaneously.)
But
here’s the thing. The temptation that led to our fall is wanting to be “like
God.” In the verse in Isaiah, we are told that God does not grow weary. Since
we aren’t God, and we do have limited resources, we can’t help but grow weary
when they are depleted. And yet, Paul calls on us to be like God in not growing
weary in doing good.
But no end of good needs to be done, so how are we to accomplish this
mission impossible? To keep doing something physically, one needs to get sufficient
rest or sleep, eat – good, healthy food preferably, drink enough water, and exercise
regularly. Getting a periodic checkup to make sure everything is working right
is another good idea. I keep wishing I could find easy parallels for other
areas of our lives but it comes down to sufficient input, output, and activity with someone to keep us accountable and aware of any problems we may be
causing.
So,
as we’re headed toward a busy time of year with lots of opportunities to do
good, what ideas can you think of to help yourself or someone else not grow
weary?
