Unless

Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the guards stand watch in vain. In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for food to eat— for he grants sleep to those he loves. Children are a heritage from the Lord, offspring a reward from him. Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are children born in one’s youth. Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them. They will not be put to shame when they contend with their opponents in court. (Psalm 127)

I’ve said before that wisdom is understanding and dealing with reality as reality. So how do we handle this wisdom psalm? Has anyone ever seen the Lord build a house? One day, the lot across the street is empty. Then, while no one comes to do any work, a basement appears, then the framing, etc. Or the whole thing instantly appears. While I believe such a thing is possible, I do not believe it to be the one and only understanding of the Lord building a house. Throughout Scripture, you find people stepping in to help God build a “house” or to fix the house He’d built: Adam and Eve, the people prior to Noah, the builders of Babylon, Abram and Sarai, Rachel and Jacob, Joseph (in correcting which of Isaac’s hands was on which child), the Israelites, and Saul. Then David came along and God said that He would build a house for David. Solmon was David’s son, so he was part of the house. As people worked within the parameters God decreed, the houses stood and grew. And when the people didn’t, the houses didn’t.

Then, there is another sense in which The Lord builds houses. He set up the physical universe, meaning that He provides the supplies and tools needed to build houses. If we work within the natural laws He established, the buildings, families, and societies we construct are likely to stand. If we ignore the supplies, tools, and laws He created, the house isn’t going to last because it will be made of nothing, using nothing, and according to no physical laws.

The other places we tend to put our trust: in the military and our defenses, in our ambition and hard work, and in what we believe to be our legacies and investments (children) can be seen in the same way. This is one of the reasons I believe that any philosophy, culture, or government that is set up to replace God or that dismisses God is doomed to failure. You’re free to disagree, but the challenge you face is in building your house without anything that God created, and it’s up to you to prove you aren’t a thief.

The List

Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,   through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we boast in the hope of the glory of God. Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance;   perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us. (Romans 5:1-5)           Think about it. We have been justified. At least, we could be justified if we stopped insisting that our justification be based on our merits. We have peace with God, or could have peace if we stopped throwing temper tantrums. We have gained access into grace i...

Listen!

While he was still speaking, a bright cloud enveloped them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!” (Matthew 17:5)            Do you like roller coasters? I don't. You spend forever climbing a hill. You get to the top and have half a second, then you race down to a low point. Sometimes the racing down involves tying your insides into knots. At the bottom, you either have to be dragged up another hill or you get off the ride. Peter's life was a roller coaster from the time he met Jesus. There would be miracles, and then Jesus would teach things that didn't always make sense, and then they'd go out and perform miracles, and return to be taught. Peter was praised for giving the right answer to "Who do you say that I am?" Jesus said that said answer came from God. Peter was at the top of the hill.            ...

Prayer Lists

Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good. (I Peter 2:2-3)   In connection with what I wrote yesterday about the possibility that I’m wrong, I’m feeling the need to go back to basics - craving spiritual milk because somehow, I missed something. It’s a little embarrassing, craving milk like a newborn, but the truth probably is that we are newborns many times in many ways in our lives. From God’s perspective, we may never be anything more than newborns, forever needing that milk. On the other hand, being a newborn can also be exciting because so much is new. My mind is playing pinball - ricocheting from one idea to the next and through six more before it happens to hit the third again. The main topic is prayer. I have at least seven organizing structures all somewhat influenced by the movie War Room , which I’v...
