Jannes and Jambres

But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God— having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with them. They are the kind who worm their way into homes and gain control over weak-willed women, who are loaded down with sins and are swayed by all kinds of evil desires, always learning but never able to acknowledge the truth. Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so also these men oppose the truth—men of depraved minds, who, as far as the faith is concerned, are rejected. (II Timothy 3:1-8)

As we grow closer to the Day of the Lord, things are going to get darker. That’s a generally accepted understanding among at least a good portion of Christians. It’s the opposite view of the Progressive mentality, which says that no matter how bad things get, we can make them better than they were, faster, stronger…. For the last eight years, young folk have been told to go home to their parents and explain things to them. For the previous 50 years, they have been building strength, quietly working in the background, often with our permission. The media is full of this mentality. Worm its way into our houses? We invite it and are angry if anyone suggests that we’re keeping bad company.
The part of today’s passage that most attracted my attention today is “Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so also these men oppose the truth…” Jannes and Jambres were the lead magicians in the pharaoh’s court. You probably know the story. God turns the water to blood. The pharaoh’s magicians turned water to blood. God causes the Nile to bring forth frogs. The pharaoh’s magicians bring forth frogs. God brought forth gnats…oops. By the time God got to the plague of boils, the magicians were sending notes.
I suspect there’s a pattern here. There is an extent to which man can accomplish godlike deeds. Notice, those impressive feats involved making more of what God had already made, which didn’t solve the problem. It explained it. “We can do that!” so it’s no big deal. Just a trick. Eventually, their capacity to replicate and imitate was not up to the challenge. They admitted that it was the “finger of God” at work.
In 1850, Origin of the Species was published, providing an explanation for the creation of all life. For the life of a creature is in the blood,” (Leviticus 17:11a) and part of that explanation is that all life originated in and came out of the water, not unlike frogs. I’m not going to pretend that the parallels continue, but those two are amusing. It seems to me that sciencism is now the secret art which is being used by many Janneses and Jamreses. Scientists can replicate some of what God has done. They can explain more, even if they can’t replicate. Those explanations may not be right, but the explanations are accepted because they are scientists, the high priests of the New World Order.
And like Jannes and Jambres’ solutions that only made the problem worse, it seems to me that science doesn’t solve as many problems as it complicates them and makes them worse. Plants and animals introduced to solve some problem become invasive species – remember Killer Bees? Our technology not only transports other invasive species accidentally (Zebra mussels in the Great Lakes) but the technology may add to other environmental issues (Global warming) and so our scientists come along with their theories and solutions and we’re expected to say, “Oh, our heroes!” I think I hear frogs croaking.
As scientists claimed to be able to explain more and more of the universe according to its naturalistic and mechanistic philosophies, they started talking of the “God of the Gaps,” meaning that God was being pushed out of more and more of the picture, leaving smaller and smaller gaps in which anyone need consider Him to be of any significance. They think they can stuff more and more into their box. As they shove things into their box, other things escape as our understanding grows.
We don’t need to worry as we face our Jannes and Jambres. Replication and explanation eventually end in …oops.

The Right Road

Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast. If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me and the light become night around me,” even the darkness will not be dark to you; the night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to you. (Psalm 139:7-12)                  For years before GPSes existed, I told people I wanted something in my car that would tell me, “Turn left in half a mile…turn left in a quarter mile…turn left in 500 feet… turn left in 100 feet…turn left now …You missed the turn, Dummy!” The problem isn’t necessarily that I get lost so much as I’m afraid I’ll get lost. I don’t want to have to spend my whole trip stressing over the next turn. I have the same problem with my spiritual journey.

Died as a Ransom

For this reason Christ is the mediator of a new covenant, that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance—now that he has died as a ransom to set them free from the sins committed under the first covenant. (Hebrews 9:15)                  This is something I’d really rather not think about but here it is and it’s important. I was reading in Bold Love about seeking revenge.  The author wrote of seeking justice when a supposed Christian does something sinful, harmful, and/or horrific, like sexually abusing a daughter.  And the thought that came to mind was of God asking if Jesus’ death was sufficient payment to me for the sin committed against me.                I have no specific longing for revenge, vengeance, or justice. I’m sure there are some lurking somewhere in my heart, but this wasn’t a response to one. It was more a question of principle. Jesus’ death was sufficient payment for to God for our sins.  That’s the standard Sunday Schoo

Out of the Depths

Out of the depths I have cried to You, Lord. Lord, hear my voice! Let Your ears be attentive to the sound of my pleadings.   If You, Lord, were to keep account of guilty deeds, Lord, who could stand? But there is forgiveness with You, so that You may be revered. I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and I wait for His word. My soul waits in hope for the Lord more than the watchmen for the morning; Yes, more than the watchmen for the morning. Israel, wait for the Lord; for with the Lord there is mercy, and with Him is abundant redemption. And He will redeem Israel from all his guilty deeds . (Psalm 130)             I like Mr. Peterson’s interpretation of the first line. “The bottom has fallen out of my life!” Of course, the problem for some of us is the fact that we’re drama queens, and/or we’re weak. Any time anything happens that disturbs our sense of mastery and control, the bottom has fallen out of our lives. If the past couple of days have taught me anything, they’ve t
