Comfort

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God. (II Corinthians 1:3-4)

Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. (Ephesians 6:13)

“It may not be OK for as long as you live, but you will be OK.”

“God will guide, protect, and strengthen you. He loves you.”

“You can grow and become stronger.”

“You are not as fragile as you think.”

“This is not meant to destroy you but to build you into a stronger, wiser, better person.”

These are the things that com-fort/with-strength is meant to convey to us. Comfort isn’t about making us feel all warm and fuzzy. It’s meant to empower us. And what is it meant to empower us to do? Today’s passage does not hold all of the answers to that question, but it holds a big one. We are with-strengthened or empowered to strengthen and empower others.

God doesn’t give us things in a vacuum. His gifts are given in order to be given. With comforting or empowering in mind, we’re going to return to a passage examined many years ago, and probably at least one time since. God gives us armor to use in our battle against evil. But it is not given to us so we can look nice in our shining armor and pose for pictures. It’s given to us to be used to protect ourselves, others, and even more, to enable them to protect themselves and others. Our standing our ground may seem like self-defense when we’re in the heat of battle, but others can be protected or emboldened by our example… even if we think we lose. And that brings to mind a poem.

                    My Five Smooth Stones

My five smooth stones, they missed their mark today.

The giant laughed and went his scornful way.

and I, left dazed and bloody on the field,

can only say that I refused to yield,

for all the good that did, I slowed him not

No vict’ry song; it’s better off forgot

Your five smooth stones, they missed their mark today

But mine flew straight. They did not go astray.

Your ego’s wound will let your soul be healed,

and from the worst, my mercy did you shield.

The battle won was not the one you thought

But standing there, you did not do for naught.

The List

Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,   through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we boast in the hope of the glory of God. Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance;   perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us. (Romans 5:1-5)           Think about it. We have been justified. At least, we could be justified if we stopped insisting that our justification be based on our merits. We have peace with God, or could have peace if we stopped throwing temper tantrums. We have gained access into grace i...

Listen!

While he was still speaking, a bright cloud enveloped them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!” (Matthew 17:5)            Do you like roller coasters? I don't. You spend forever climbing a hill. You get to the top and have half a second, then you race down to a low point. Sometimes the racing down involves tying your insides into knots. At the bottom, you either have to be dragged up another hill or you get off the ride. Peter's life was a roller coaster from the time he met Jesus. There would be miracles, and then Jesus would teach things that didn't always make sense, and then they'd go out and perform miracles, and return to be taught. Peter was praised for giving the right answer to "Who do you say that I am?" Jesus said that said answer came from God. Peter was at the top of the hill.            ...

Prayer Lists

Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good. (I Peter 2:2-3)   In connection with what I wrote yesterday about the possibility that I’m wrong, I’m feeling the need to go back to basics - craving spiritual milk because somehow, I missed something. It’s a little embarrassing, craving milk like a newborn, but the truth probably is that we are newborns many times in many ways in our lives. From God’s perspective, we may never be anything more than newborns, forever needing that milk. On the other hand, being a newborn can also be exciting because so much is new. My mind is playing pinball - ricocheting from one idea to the next and through six more before it happens to hit the third again. The main topic is prayer. I have at least seven organizing structures all somewhat influenced by the movie War Room , which I’v...
