So then, dear friends, since you
are looking forward to this, make every effort to be found spotless, blameless
and at peace with him. Bear in mind that our Lord’s patience means salvation,
just as our dear brother Paul also wrote you with the wisdom that God gave him.
He writes the same way in all his letters, speaking in them of these matters.
His letters contain some things that are hard to understand, which ignorant and
unstable people distort, as they do the other Scriptures, to their own
destruction. (II Peter 3:14-16)
Sometimes,
Paul's letters are hard to understand? It makes me feel better that even back
then, people struggled to understand. Somehow, the fact that they didn't get it
makes it seem to me that I'm not quite so stupid when I don't get it. They had
the benefit of being from a culture that was closer to Paul's than mine is.
I
like the fact that God puts some stuff on the highest shelf, and even keeps
some back in a store room. The fact that I don't understand everything, and
don't conquer every challenge in ten seconds flat keeps me interested. It keeps
me engaged. Some people say that God should make everything easy for everyone,
but that would be boring. I like it that He is so God that we can't possibly
every completely understand. He is a mystery which we will never completely
solve, but I suspect we are welcome to continue to try.
