Changes?


Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows (James 1:17)

         I used to like to watch TV shows that now make me cringe or yawn. I used to be able to jog more than six miles per day, five days per week. I used to be a library clerk, an administrative assistant, a glorified stock clerk and a jewelry sales consultant. As we look back at the last year, most of us have changes we want to make, or changes we need to make. Not God.
         The Father of the heavenly lights does not change. The mountains erode, even the stars grow old and cold, but God does not change. People think He ought to change, to become more like what they want. Some think He ought to be more forgiving. How do you forgive more than everything? The problem is not that He needs to forgive more, it's that they need to repent more. Some say He needs to be more loving. How do you love more than giving your life for someone? The problem is not that He needs to love more, but that they need to love more.
        Some say that God should evolve, change with the times and understand that things He says are wrong are right. The problem isn't with His understanding. It's with theirs. Reality does not change to suit their preferences or agendas. Perhaps the most important reason it is good that God doesn't change is because if He did, He could just as easily change for the worse as for the better. In fact, any change would be for the worse even though they don't see it that way.

Think About These Things

                 Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. (Philippians 4:8) This passage is a major challenge for me. Like everyone else, I struggle to keep my thoughts from wandering off into the weeds, then wondering what possible benefits those weeds might have… Sigh. A Virgin?
