Same Question


“When the foundations are being destroyed, what can the righteous do?”
The Lord is in his holy temple; the Lord is on his heavenly throne. He observes everyone on earth; his eyes examine them. (Psalm 11:3-4)

            I’ve heard the first line of today’s passage before, and it seems to me that when I’ve heard it, the person speaking it was asking as one of “the righteous.” I don’t recall whether they were wringing their hands, shaking their fist, or weeping. Those seem to be the tones taken in the psalm itself. To those who are worried, or angry, or mournful because the foundations are being destroyed, the answer is that the LORD is in his holy temple. The LORD is on his heavenly throne. He observes everyone on earth; His eyes examine them.
           Today, however, what comes to mind is the sentiment espoused by our former president, who announced early in his administration that his goal was a fundamental reformation of America. One can’t fundamentally reform something without destroying the foundations on which it was built. Those who agree with his perspective don’t wring their hands or weep about the foundations being destroyed, they raise their fist in celebration, and deride those they self-righteously call the “self-righteous.” They gleefully and maliciously say, “When the foundations are being destroyed, what can the righteous do? To those folks, the answer is that the LORD is in his holy temple. The LORD is on his heavenly throne. He observes everyone on earth; His eyes examine them.”
            Same question. Same answer. The righteous may find comfort. The “Progressive” would be wise to fear, but he won't because "resistance is futile, they will be assimilated."
