Of David.
In
you, Lord my God, I put my trust. (Psalm
25:1)
but I gave them
this command: Obey me, and I will be your God and
you will be my people. Walk in obedience to
all I command you, that it may go well with you.
(Jeremiah 7:23)
The Lord your
God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great
delight in you; in his love he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice
over you with singing.” (Zephaniah 3:17)
Pilate answered,
“What I have written, I have written.” (John
19:22)
Have you ever heard (or
seen) this: “Well, my God would never ____”?
Part of me says, “Well, I
would never claim to own God.” God is God, after all, He is His own person. But
David lays claim to Him.
But today’s verse makes
it clear that there is a relationship involved. He is our God. Your
God. My God. I’m hearing echoes of what I wrote about putting my heart
into the care of God and of “I can’t identify myself as a Christian (fish on
the bumper, cross pendent around the neck) because if I sin, I’ll humiliate
God.”
I can’t ask God to claim
me. What if I embarrassed Him? Today, I wonder if I struggle with the idea that
I might be able to claim Him. What if He embarrasses me? What if He…rejoices
over me with singing?
“No, shush, God. You
don’t understand. I’m not as good as You think I am.”
And God quotes Pilate. He
has the authority to declare over us what we cannot declare for ourselves.
Doesn’t He have a right to rejoice over us if He wants?
