False Prophecy

When they sin against you—for there is no one who does not sin—and you become angry with them and give them over to the enemy, who takes them captive to his own land, far away or near;  and if they have a change of heart in the land where they are held captive, and repent and plead with you in the land of their conquerors and say, ‘We have sinned, we have done wrong, we have acted wickedly’;  and if they turn back to you with all their heart and soul in the land of their enemies who took them captive, and pray to you toward the land you gave their fathers, toward the city you have chosen and the temple I have built for your Name;  then from heaven, your dwelling place, hear their prayer and their plea, and uphold their cause.  And forgive your people, who have sinned against you; forgive all the offenses they have committed against you, and cause their conquerors to show them mercy;  for they are your people and your inheritance, whom you brought out of Egypt, out of that iron-smelting furnace." (I Kings 8:46-51)

The world is falling apart, and in this political season, as in each political season, there are cries for Christians to get involved politically. We need to take this nation back, return to its Constitutional basis, get God back in the White House.  Once that happens, laws will be changed and the societal system will be repaired and everything will be safe, and wonderful. America will be great again. As motivating as these words may sound, they are the words of false and progressive prophets. No doubt they mean well, but it is not what Scripture tells us repeatedly.
Today's passage is the first time the word "repent" is used in the NIV. The speaker is Solomon, and the occasion was the dedication of the Temple. It is a familiar refrain throughout the Old Testament. The most well-known version of it is "if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways[repent], then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land." (II Chronicles 7:14.)
The first step to the solution for what ails our nation is not to fix the government. It is for Christians to repent, to forsake their sins and to make right what is wrong in their own lives and within the Church. That does not mean that we should stop speaking out about the evils we see in society, but that we must also focus on the evils in our own. It does not mean that we must be perfect before we can address the problems "out there" but it does mean we'd better be addressing our own problems with even more vigor. We need to be building the better society ourselves instead of waiting for some messiah who will repair the brokenness of our nation without inconveniencing us about the brokenness of our own lives.

The List

Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,   through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we boast in the hope of the glory of God. Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance;   perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us. (Romans 5:1-5)           Think about it. We have been justified. At least, we could be justified if we stopped insisting that our justification be based on our merits. We have peace with God, or could have peace if we stopped throwing temper tantrums. We have gained access into grace i...

Meditations of the Heart

May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer. (Psalm19:14)           As I started writing this post, I noted that the meditations of my heart are all over the mental landscape, from a hub where eight superhighways come together to a lunar or nuclear landscape. Do you see my error? The moment I read the word meditation , I think about thoughts. But what’s described here is the meditations of our hearts ; our wills.           While the meditations of our minds may be all over the place, the meditations of our wills tend to be a little more stable by the time we are adults. We no longer tend to want to pursue the ten separate careers we did in any given day as children. Part of this is humble acceptance of reality. We come to understand that we can’t do it all. I think another part of it is disappointmen...

Listen To Him

The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your fellow Israelites. You must listen to him . (Deuteronomy 18:15)           Today, we switch from Jesus’ claims of “I am” to prophecies made about Him. My Bible platform is starting in Deuteronomy. I’d start in Genesis, where we would learn that the one who would save us would be a descendant of Eve (Genesis 3:15), of Noah (by default), Abram and Sara(Genesis 12:1-3). Isaac (Genesis 17:19), Jacob (Genesis 25:23), Judah (Genesis 29:8), and David (II Samuel 7:12-16). There were also references to a new covenant (Jer. 31:31-34; Ezek. 36:22-32). In addition, there were prophecies about when and where the prophet/Messiah would be born and what would happen to him.           Of course, naysayers will claim that Jesus’ life was retrofitted or reverse enginee...
