I
keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may
give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. I
pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may
know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious
inheritance in the saints, and his incomparably great power for us who believe. (Eph 1:17-19a)
What
is God like? You've probably heard different descriptions. Some see him as a
kindly grandfather who winks at mischief and sneaks treats to the grandkids.
Some see Him as an angry judge just waiting for the chance to strike someone
with lightning. Some see Him as distant and uninvolved. Still others think that
He is so loving, kind and gentle that everyone gets to go to heaven. When I'm not being careful, when I don't catch
myself, I tend to see God as a King or a Father who is always disappointed with
me. I know that's not what He's really like, but when I'm disappointed with
myself, it's easy to think that He is, too.
I
suspect everyone has one or more flawed images of God. Today's passage is a
prayer that will do battle with those flawed views. If you feel led to join me,
I'm going to pray this prayer for myself and for three other people for the
next week. When the week is over, I'll report what I've learned. You can share
or not as you feel led.
