Wholly...Holy

Then a teacher of the law came to him and said, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.”
Jesus replied, “Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.”
Another disciple said to him, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.”
But Jesus told him, “Follow me, and let the dead bury their own dead.” (Matthew 8:19-22)

Jesus replied: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.” (Matthew 22:37-39a)

          But
I have been told that whenever you say “but” you are telling you audience that everything you just said was a lie.
This morning’s reading about prayer deals with holiness. God says that we are to love Him with all our hearts, all our souls, all our minds and all our strengths. Wholly. Not holding anything back. Jesus said that if we love Him, we’ll obey Him. You cannot have divided loyalties and expect God to give you something. That’s like asking your spouse for money to go spend with your boyfriend. You may think it’s being clever, but it doesn’t get much lower. What’s sad is that we may not even realize that’s what we’re doing.
I know people who share posts about both God and horoscopes. (“It’s just for fun.”) I know people who claim to be Christians, but they’re living with their boyfriend/girlfriend, or they’re cheating on their spouses. I know that I claim to love God, but when it comes to obeying Him by eating according to how He designed my body to function….
There is grace, but abusing it is not an option. The reality is that we are fallen. The truth is…

So how are we to wholly/holy pray? For what dare we ask that we won’t misuse? Three ideas come to mind. The first is to pray honestly. It’s difficult to be honest with ourselves. I know many of my prayers are for my own comfort. I tell God that if He causes the book I’m writing to be a bestseller, I’ll be able to buy Dad a new place to live in Florida, I’ll be able to give more money to the Church and other worthy causes, etc. Those things are true. Of course, I’ll also have better accommodations, fewer frustrations, more significance, more control…. God knows I want these things,
and they aren’t necessarily bad things to want. Why not be honest?
A second idea is to ask for guidance. Ask for guidance about yourself.
Search me, O God, and know my heart;
test me and know my anxious thoughts.
See if there is any offensive way in me,
and lead me in the way everlasting. (Psalm 139:23-24)
Seek guidance, also, about what you should ask, recognizing that you may misunderstand. Let your prayers sincerely conclude:
yet not my will, but yours be done (Luke 22:42)
The third idea on keeping our prayer holy/wholly is to pray Scripture. There are promises all through the Bible. There are examples of prayers that were granted, and prayers that were not granted. When I intercede, unless someone has provided a specific request, I often use the fruit of the Spirit, pairing the next person on the list with the next fruit on the list, or, I lift up my own prayer of “WDA” for them.
To all of this, I add what Mr. Bounds said: to pray with you all your mind, all your wits, all your heart, all your will, all your emotions, all your body, all your spirit…to be whole in your prayers. This is something I need to consider further and implement.

A Virgin?

Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel. (Isaiah 7:14)           This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit. (Matthew 1:18)           But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favor with God. You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end.”            “How will this be,” Mary asked the...

Saved?

I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand. I and the Father are one.” (John 10:28-30) “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’ Then I will tell them plainly, “I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’ ” (Matthew 7:21-23) Not at all! Let God be true, and every human being a liar. As it is written: “So that you may be proved right when you speak and prevail when you judge.” (Romans 3:4)   What conclusion do you draw when someone who was raised in a Christian family and church, perhaps even playing a significant role in a chur...

Meditations of the Heart

May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer. (Psalm19:14)           As I started writing this post, I noted that the meditations of my heart are all over the mental landscape, from a hub where eight superhighways come together to a lunar or nuclear landscape. Do you see my error? The moment I read the word meditation , I think about thoughts. But what’s described here is the meditations of our hearts ; our wills.           While the meditations of our minds may be all over the place, the meditations of our wills tend to be a little more stable by the time we are adults. We no longer tend to want to pursue the ten separate careers we did in any given day as children. Part of this is humble acceptance of reality. We come to understand that we can’t do it all. I think another part of it is disappointmen...
